Stress sucks. Not only does it turn you into a negative person that is easily irritated and angry, but it also has serious health consequences as well. Sadly though, too many of us don’t do enough to rid stress from our lives. Luckily, I am here to help! Just call me Dr. Stress Buster! Below I detail 10 stress busters that will help you conquer your stress once and for all!
10 Stress Busters For A Better Life
If you want to beat stress, you can take it out on something else. Note not someone else, but something else. I love to lift weights. It releases endorphins and gives me a high. On the days when I lift, I am a much more positive person and I have a ton of energy.
To get excited to lift weights, you have to trick yourself to actually go. For me, I enjoy it so much that I rarely have to trick myself, but for others, you may have to use this technique frequently in the beginning. When someone or something happens to tick you off, take it out on the weights.
There are times that I pretend that the barbell loaded with weights is the know-it-all co-worker that just gets under my skin. As I lift the weights, it is me getting back at him. I take out all of my anger and frustrations on the barbell. By the time and I done lifting, not only am I in a better mood from lifting, but also because I released those emotions.
If lifting weights isn’t your thing, then simply go for a walk. Get outside and smell the fresh air. Look around and notice how beautiful things are around you. Then stop for a moment, close your eyes and take a few deep breaths.
The fresh air and the calmness will help you to relieve some of the stress you are feeling as well as put you in a more positive frame of mind.
Not only is meditation great for relieving stress, it also helps your concentration and lower depression. After picking one of the various forms meditation, you will make it a point to meditate a few times a week. Don’t get down on yourself for having to meditate frequently if you suffer from a lot of stress.
Remember the goal here is to remove stress from your life. The more you mediate, the better off you will be.
If your stress comes from worry, worry no more! In most cases, the things we worry about most never come to realization. The next time you are worrying about something, make it a point to write it down. Then go for a walk or meditate. When you are in clearer mindset, look back on what you wrote. Chances are you will see just how absurd it was. Doing this exercise a few times will help you to notice when you are being unrealistic about things.
When I was younger, I swore I always heard the pots and pans banging around in our kitchen when I was in bed. At the time I would get scared and call for my Mom. Over time though, I realized this made no sense at all. Why would people be banging pots and pans in the middle of the night unless it was New Year’s? Learn to put things into perspective and you will find that your stress goes away.
Address What Stresses You
For most of us, there are a few things that stress us out the most. Money, work, and world events are just a few. Take the time to look within and understand what stresses you out the most. Once you identify the topic, look into why it stresses you out so much. Are you in debt and want to get out of debt? Take the steps to do so and your stress goes away.
If your poison is world events, maybe you need to turn off the TV and stop watching the news. Or maybe you learn to be more realistic when watching the news so that you don’t get stressed.
Listen To Music
Music is a great way to take our minds off of the day and to get lost mentally. I suggest you run through your music and pick out your favorite songs and then create a playlist. The next time you are feeling stressed, simply start up that playlist and tune out the stress. Listening to the music you love will get you to focus on happy moments in your life and in doing so will remove the stress you are feeling.
Eat A Treat
Another great stress buster is eating a treat. But, you do have to be careful here. If you are really stressed and non of the other tips have worked, then you can try eating a treat. My go-to treat is a Dairy Queen Blizzard. When I eat the first bite, all the stress just melts away.
Where you have to be careful though is to not make this your default option for becoming stress-free. The reason is because most of our favorite treats aren’t the healthiest food choices and eating them all of the time can lead to other issues.
Watch TV or Movies
Watching TV or movies helps to relieve stress because they get you to focus on something else for a little while. Pick a great comedy or romantic movie and get swept up in the moment. Or you could try to beat out your stress by watching a motivational show. Watching The Biggest Loser or something else along those lines might inspire you to reach a personal goal of yours. This will help you to focus even after the show or movie is over.
Talk To A Friend
Talking things out is another great option. Call up a good friend and just tell them you need someone to vent to. They don’t need to give advice on the situation, you just need someone to talk to so you can get things off your chest. The best thing about this option is that you can combine it with walking and be active and relieve stress at the same time!
I’ve said it before and studies have proven that laughter is the best medicine. No amount of stress stands a chance to someone laughing. I don’t think it is possible honestly. So listen to a great comic or read some jokes online. It doesn’t matter if the jokes are cheesy, as long as you start laughing, that is all that matters.
At the end of the day, you need to learn to control your levels of stress. Keeping it bottled in is not a good idea. So review this list of stress busters and pick a few to start working into your routine when you are stressed.
