Do you find yourself stressed more often than not? I know for me, there are certain times when I am stressed more than usual. Most times, this added stress is because of a big interview I have or a presentation I have to give. If you find yourself stressed before big events like me, or you just suffer from stress in general, there are things you can do to de-stress. Below are 4 tips for how to de-stress your day.
How To De-Stress Your Day In 4 Steps
Prepare The Night Before
To de-stress your day, you can start the night before. In fact, you should start doing this. There are two approaches you can take here:
- The big things
- The little things
The Big Things: Let’s say you have a big project due the next day. Before bed, give it one last review and make sure everything is complete and makes sense. Once you verify everything is how you want it, take the project (if it is a physical presentation) and put it by your car keys or your wallet so that you don’t forget it when leaving. If it is on a USB stick, then put that in your briefcase or next to your car keys or wallet. Additionally, you should email a copy to yourself just in case the drive fails.
The Little Things: If you don’t have a big project due, you can just simply better prepare for the next day by laying out your clothes or putting your wallet and car keys next to each other. Maybe you even lay out towels so you just jump into the shower after you wake up. Do whatever you can so that fewer things can go wrong the next morning.
By taking care of things the night before, you lower the chances of things going wrong or blowing up in your face. Additionally, when things do go wrong, you can stay relaxed knowing that you planned ahead.
Set The Tone
From the moment you wake up, you set the tone for your day. If you wake up and start focusing on the negative things, like how tired you are, you are subconsciously going to keep looking for all the things that are wrong in your day. If on the other hand you start thinking positively, you subconsciously look for all of the good things in your day.
When you start off the day on a positive note, you will be happier and more energetic. In other words, you will be more likely to allow things to simply roll off your back.
The easiest way to set the tone for the day is to….
Start Off With Positive Thoughts
When you start your day off with a positive thought, you won’t feel as stressed. Trust me on this one. Tomorrow after you wake up, say to yourself that you are excited for all of the great things that are happening in your life and that you are happy for all the things you have and the people in your life. It is a simple affirmation that will start your day off on the right foot.
An added benefit to thinking positive thoughts is that it takes away from the opportunity to think negative thoughts. The more you are focusing on the positives in your life, the less you are getting sucked into the negative and getting stressed.
Make To-Do Lists
The key to making your to-do list for de-stressing your day is to first list all of the things you need to do and then re-write the list by putting the most important items at the top of the list. This will help you to focus on what actually has to get done as opposed to just doing the easy tasks so you can cross them off.
When you just focus on crossing items off, you come to find that it is 3pm and you haven’t even started the big things you need to get accomplished. When this happens, you get stressed, freak out and even less work gets done.
If you follow these 4 steps on how to de-stress your day, you will find that you are happier and more relaxed. It’s not the big things that need to change to de-stress your day (though in some cases it is), but more of just getting organized and planning ahead. If you can do this, you will melt stress away and will become a much happier person.[Photo Credit: Bernard Goldbach]
